Rehabilitation Services
The Speech-Language Pathologists at Sunshine Children’s Home and Rehab Center have extensive training in the oral motor mechanism for functional speech, safe swallowing, and feeding.
Our staff is comprised of nationally-certified therapists who diagnose, treat, and support oral motor dysfunctions. Speech-Language Pathologists help patients develop or recover reliable communication skills through verbal, functional sign language, or communication boards.
Specialty evaluations and interventions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Receptive language development
- Expressive language development; articulation, voice, fluency, dysarthria, apraxia
- Communication skills and social interaction
- Cognition, problem solving, reasoning orientation and memory
- Pre-speech and feeding skills, swallowing and motor speech disorders
- Augmentative communication
- Articulation/Speech production
- Sign language
The Physical Therapy Department at Sunshine Children’s Home and Rehab Center works to maximize each child’s potential through techniques promoting the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability.
All of our Physical Therapists are licensed through the Physical Therapy Board of New York. Our Physical Therapists are professionals who assist children in moving and performing functional activities, while promoting overall health and fitness.
Therapeutic exercises and activities are implemented to create challenges that allow our children to experience success in normal movement patterns during play and functional activities.
Specialty evaluation and intervention include, but are not limited to the following:
- Gross motor skills, ambulation, gait, mobility
- Balance, coordination and postural control
- Muscle strength, range of motion and skeletal alignment
- Sensory motor function, functional exercises
- Adaptive equipment assessment and training (walkers, standers, wheelchairs, gait trainers, etc.)
- Recommendation of adaptive equipment and assistive devices
- Orthotic/Prosthetic assessment, recommendation and training
- Orthotic fabrication and inhibitive casting
Sunshine Children’s Home and Rehab Center specializes in children from birth to 21 years of age who suffer from developmental or acquired physical, orthopedic injuries, or muscular disease. All therapists are licensed through the Occupational Therapy Board of New York and certified through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
Specialty evaluation and intervention include, but are not limited to the following:
- Activities of daily living
- Fine motor, visual motor and visual perceptual development
- Upper extremity muscle strength, range of motion and skeletal alignment
- Infant development
- Balance, coordination, core strength and postural control
- Self-help skills: feeding, dressing, grooming
- Sensory processing and integration
- Organizational and play skills
- Adaptive equipment, and positioning (feeding and dressing devices, writing utensil modifications, etc.)
- Visual motor and visual perceptual skills
- Handwriting
- Upper extremity splinting assessment and fabrication
